Our Team

BABETTE: Babette loves blueberries and long walks through the straw. She’s a French chicken, like Margaux, but she’s a cuckoo Marans, which refers to the somewhat crazy pattern of her black and white feathers. She lays the chocolate colored egg typical of a Marans.

CHICK-AHGO: My rock-n-roll chicken, named by a friend for the rock group Chicago, as well as for my Illinois roots. Chick-ahgo has spiky head feathers, a wild scarlet comb, a fine strut, and iridescent black and emerald feathers. She’s a cross-bred Olive Egger, who does indeed lay olive green colored eggs.

CHICKPEA: The class clown. Ameracauna chickens like Chickpea are known for their ear muffs. Hers resemble mutton chop sideburns. Looking at her simply makes me giggle. When out of the coop and its run, she loves to hurtle herself through the air, and chest bumps her fellow chicks. She always has something to say, and if I haven’t been to the coop in a few hours, she makes a mournful drawn-out bwock, to let me know she is feeling neglected. She lays striking light blue eggs.

MARGAUX: Queen of the Flock. Top of the pecking order. They say chickens are the last living link to dinosaurs. When Margaux was young, she seemed one step removed from a T. Rex! She mellowed as she aged, though, and when she ascended to the throne a couple of years ago, she became a benevolent ruler. A Splash Marans, a French breed, she laid gorgeous deep brown eggs, but at 7+ years, is now is in hen-opause. She has the cutest feathered feet.

NOODLE: The Vice Principal. The Enforcer. Margaux’s best buddy. She’s fearless, and makes sure all of the “little” chickens are kept in line, even though they are now all larger than her. A Silver-Lace Wyandotte, she lays copious numbers of tan eggs.

SOPHIA: Oh Sophia. Named for two beautiful Italian Sophias—actress Loren, and my friend Minchilli. This Sophia’s a serene and gorgeous Lavender Orpington, a huge fluff ball with a purple cast to her gray feathers. Before she lays, she sings in an operatic style. Her eggs are distinctly pink-ish tan.
